It’s not good game design to provide a final boss who has items far beyond anything you could ever earn or buy, and spells far more effective and far cheaper than anything else ever discovered in the game. This falls under what one excellent article referred to as “Extreme Rule Changes When Fighting Boss Characters.” Until then, the progression was natural; with the final boss, Puzzle Quest simply destroys the expectation of a tough but fair game conclusion.
It’s also problematic when your AI is so bad that you must give it the ability to see gems that have fallen yet, beyond the top edge of the screen. It also cripples your credibilty a bit when the AI makes a single 3-match and drops 6 4-match bonuses in a row. This happened to me repeatedly while I played through the entire game–so much so, that the AI’s dishonesty became a joke between my wife and myself.
In short, for all its features, I’d take a pass on Puzzle Quest. The AI doesn’t challenge, it cheats, and the final boss will leave you banging your head against the wall.
